Lawyers and other professionals are returning to their physical offices, but they are doing so at a jog, not a sprint.

A recent survey shows a 47 percent occupancy rate for commercial spaces in the nation’s 10 largest metro areas. This ranges from a high of nearly 60 percent in Houston, number one on the list, to 38 percent occupancy in San Jose, CA, number ten.

These numbers are up significantly from 2020 when the pandemic struck and office buildings across the country went dark overnight. For more than a year, work-from-home was the norm. Now, workers are trickling back, though occupancies are nowhere close just a few years ago,
