N.C. State Bar by the Numbers

The legal profession is going strong, with jobs growth in June hitting a 10-year highwater mark.

The legal services sector added 5,100 jobs in June 2023. Total law jobs were 1,185,100 in June 2023. Those were the best numbers since the record-setting 2,800 monthly jobs added in July 2022.

These statistics show the profession is rebounded strongly from the pandemic. Law jobs plummeted in 2020, dropping to 1,094,100 in April 2020.

But the economic news is mixed. Many firms are having to tighten their belts.

“Despite the overall jobs growth, at least a dozen large U.S. law firms have confirmed laying off lawyers, staff or both since November,” reports Reuters.

N.C. State Bar by the Numbers

The N.C. State Bar was created in 1933 by the state General Assembly as the government agency responsible for the regulation of the legal profession in North Carolina. Here are a few State Bar facts, from the bar’s website:

  • The State Bar currently regulates over 30,000 licensed lawyers.
  • The State Bar is governed by a 61-member council whose members are lawyers elected by the lawyers in their home communities.
  • Three members of the council are not lawyers and represent the public’s interests in State Bar proceedings. These three are appointed by the governor and other elected officials.
  • Four officers are elected by the members of the council to provide leadership.
  • A staff of more than 90 lawyers and nonlawyers tend to the daily operations of the State Bar.
