Judge Gerald Arnold Announces Retirement; Daniel Zureich is Appointed President of Lawyers Mutual

Lawyers Mutual Liability Insurance Company of North Carolina announced that Gerald Arnold is retiring from his position as President of the Company, effective December 31, 2009. Judge Arnold joined Lawyers Mutual in 1998 following his retirement as Chief Judge of the North Carolina Court of Appeals and has served as Senior Vice President and, more recently, President of Lawyers Mutual.

Judge Arnold will be succeeded by Daniel M. Zureich, who will become President and Chief Executive Officer of Lawyers Mutual effective January 1, 2010. Mr. Zureich is Senior Managing Director of Aon Benfield, an international reinsurance intermediary and consulting firm serving the insurance industry. Mr. Zureich has broad experience with insurance companies similar to Lawyers Mutual and brings with him a wealth of knowledge of the industry. Mr. Zureich holds undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Missouri.

Glen Hardymon, Chairman of Lawyers Mutual's Board of Directors, said: "Judge Arnold has been a wonderful leader and an important resource for Lawyers Mutual, and we appreciate all that he has done for the Company. Judge Arnold will continue to serve as a consultant for the Company to assist Mr. Zureich as he makes his transition to Lawyers Mutual."

"We are very excited that Dan Zureich agreed to join our Company," Mr. Hardymon continued. "Lawyers Mutual is fortunate to have attracted such an experienced and knowledgeable person to lead us into the future. We look forward to our clients' meeting and getting to know Dan. He will be an asset to the Company and the state of North Carolina."

Judge Arnold said, "As I think about retiring, I do not have any message of leave-taking or farewell, but I do have strong feelings of gratitude for those with whom I have worked and what we have done together. Nothing could be more satisfying than being a part of something that is greater than you are. Lawyers Mutual was formed by the lawyers in this State who were left hanging by an insurance market in which no carrier provided reliable and continuous service. For 31 continuous years now, Lawyers Mutual has solved that problem and provided reliable service to thousands of wonderful mutual policyholders. I am blessed to have been here for 11 of those years. I do not, however, always want to be looking back. I would like to retire while I can still look to the future and hopefully give something back."

"I have gotten to know Dan Zureich in his capacity as a reinsurance broker for Lawyers Mutual," Judge Arnold continued. "He will have the freshness of outside experience with tremendous inside knowledge of the Company. He has worked hand in glove with many of us, assisting us in highly technical areas. I cannot imagine a person more uniquely qualified to become CEO of this Company. I think that the Board has hit a grand slam in Dan Zureich."
